Capitol Traveling Briefcases

This is an outreach tool designed to supplement the classroom learning experience. Each briefcase includes both classroom and small group activities with primary sources, tangible objects, and more!  Teacher packets include lesson plans with Arkansas Curriculum Standards to make prep a breeze.

Briefcases are FREE and are on loan for 2 weeks.

State Symbols (K-4th Grade)

The State Symbols briefcase is a fun interactive way to teach your students about Arkansas State Symbols. Learn about our states geology and what’s happening under the soil. Read a map and find state landmarks. Explore habitats and farming with the plants and animals that represent Arkansas. Connect information with tangible objects. This case is full of fun activities to help students learn about state symbols while they play!

Civics & Government (Grades 1-12)

Each Civics and Government briefcase includes activities to teach the 3 branches of Arkansas State Government, how a bill becomes a law, the election process, and Arkansas history. All cases will get your students excited to learn as they explore specific topics geared towards their age group. Look below to preview some of the activities unique to each case:

Primary (Grades 1st-4th) Examine primary source pictures and letters from the Little Rock Nine crisis. Learn about elections with the help from “The Cat in the Hat”. Discover notable people of Arkansas. Connect young students with early civics concepts with the fun activities inside the case.

Junior (Grades 5-8)

Explore how the Capitol was built. Analyze the symbolism in the Capitol’s murals painted by Paul Martin Heerwagen. Transcribe Federal and State documents including the constitutions. Learn about key political figures and entrepreneurs who shaped the state. This case encourages critical thinking skills as students expand their knowledge base.

Senior (Grades 9-12)

Dive deep on the legislation and logistics that show the cost to build the capitol - including the art and architecture inside. Write speeches to win votes from fellow students in a classroom election. Take on the role of legislators and try to pass a classroom law. Students will step into the real processes of Arkansas State Government and get hands on with lots of primary sources inside the case.
