Secretary of State Cole Jester Files Amicus Brief Supporting Citizenship Verification in Voter Registration

(LITTLE ROCK, ARK.) – Arkansas Secretary of State Cole Jester and nine other Secretaries of State have filed an amicus brief with the U.S. Supreme Court in the case Republican National Committee v. Mi Familia Vota, urging the Supreme Court to affirm states’ ability to verify the American citizenship of those registering to vote.

The brief argues that the National Voter Registration Act does not prevent states from requiring information necessary to determine whether an applicant is eligible to vote.

“I fully believe requiring proof of American Citizenship to register to vote is just common sense. Right now, bad federal case law is stopping that basic safeguard from happening,” said Secretary of State Cole Jester. “This case is our best chance in a generation to fix it.”

The Supreme Court granted review of the case in June.
