Granite Centennial Boulder
Located west of the Capitol, the boulder commemorates the 100th year of statehood for Arkansas. It was placed by former Governor Marion J. Futrell in 1936 under the direction of former Governor George Donaghey, who was governor when the Capitol was built. The boulder which is Nepheline Syenite weighs about 70,000 pounds. Governor Futrell's footsteps were placed in the concrete walk leading to the boulder at the suggestion of Governor Donaghey.
The inscription reads:
This Granite Boulder was placed here June 15, 1936, to commemorate the one hundredth year of Arkansas statehood. The boulder weights nearly 20 tons. It was brought from Granite Mountain, five miles south of this point and placed by the authority of the Governor J. Marion Futrell, under the direction of George W. Donaghey, Chairman of the Capitol Arts Commission and the twenty-second governor of Arkansas.
