Welcome
Dear Participant:
I would like to take this opportunity to extend an invitation to your school to participate in National Young Voter Month activities here at the State Capitol in Little Rock. As Secretary of State, I am dedicating the second week in March to young voter education in Arkansas. It is imperative that we, as leaders of our state and community, encourage young people to vote so that their voices will be heard in the political process.
I would like to invite your school to bring a delegation of up to five students to the State Capitol to participate in activities regarding young voter education. The method of selection for your delegation is up to you; however, I would encourage a diverse mix of students who will be enthusiastic about participating in voter education, and perhaps willing to share voter education concepts with their classmates. The invitation is not limited to students of voting age; in fact, we are encouraging participation by juniors and sophomores as well.
The day’s activities will include a history of voting, the Voting Rights Act, a mock election, an opportunity for eligible students to register to vote and a Capitol tour, which will include a visit to the House and Senate galleries. The Secretary of State’s office will also host a forum for participating students to voice their opinions on voter participation and current state and federal issues.
Activities will begin at 10:00 A.M.; the Secretary of State’s office will provide lunch and we’ll reconvene around 12:45. Students will be dismissed at 2:00 P.M.
Please fax the attached registration form to the attention of Crystal Shell at the Secretary of State’s office by February 22, 2008. Thank you for your cooperation and for helping the Secretary of State’s office reach out to Arkansas youth!
