Sec. Daniels Announces State Capitol to Go Dark for Earth Hour

From 8:30-9:30 pm on March 28, the Capitol and other AR landmarks will go dark to raise awareness of global climate change
LITTLE ROCK, AR— Arkansas Secretary of State Charlie Daniels today announced that the State Capitol building lights will be turned off for one hour on March 28, from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm in support of Earth Hour, a global initiative to heighten awareness of global climate change.
Other prominent Little Rock landmarks, such as the Clinton Presidential Center, Heifer International, and the Arkansas Governor’s Mansion, will also darken for Earth Hour.
“As caretaker of the State Capitol, I’ve taken measures to be more energy efficient, including replacing most of the building’s incandescent light bulbs with ones that use less energy and last longer,” Secretary Daniels said. “Energy conservation is win-win for Arkansans and for the Earth because it benefits both our pocketbooks and our environment. I urge every Arkansan to do his or her part in cutting energy consumption, starting with flipping the lights off for Earth Hour tomorrow at 8:30 pm.”
Earth Hour began in Sydney in 2007, when 2.2 million homes and businesses switched off their lights for one hour. In 2008, the message had grown into a global sustainability movement, with 50 million people switching off their lights. Global landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Rome’s Coliseum, the Sydney Opera House, and the Coca Cola billboard in New York City’s Times Square all stood in darkness.
In 2009, Earth Hour is being taken to the next level, with the goal of one billion people switching off their lights as part of a global vote. For more information, please visit
