Arkansas’s Electoral College to Meet Monday

Friday, Dec 12, 2008

LITTLE ROCK, AR—The Arkansas Electoral College will meet at 10:00 a.m. Monday, December 15, in the Old Supreme Court Room of the State Capitol to formally cast the state’s six electoral votes for Senator John McCain and Governor Sarah Palin.

Arkansas Educational Television Network (AETN) and Secretary of State Charlie Daniels have partnered to deliver the 2008 Electoral College proceedings live via web streaming. The site may be accessed from the Secretary of State’s website at www.sos.ar.gov.

“In live-streaming the state’s Electoral College proceedings, my office, in partnership with AETN, will provide Arkansans a firsthand look at how their votes on Election Day determine which presidential and vice presidential candidates ultimately receive our state’s six electoral votes,” Secretary Daniels said. “This meeting’s broadcast is a great opportunity for civic students of all ages to learn about the Electoral College and our country’s peaceful transfer of power, which is the hallmark of any successful democracy.”

Secretary Daniels will preside over the convening of the Electoral College, while Chief Justice Jim Hannah of the Arkansas Supreme Court will swear in the electors.

The number of electors equals the number of members in a state’s Congressional delegation, which is six in Arkansas. The state’s voters cast 59 percent of their votes for the McCain-Palin ticket in the November 4 election; thus, the state’s electors were selected by the Republican Party of Arkansas.

The Arkansas electors are Jim Burnett of Clinton, Reta Hamilton of Bella Vista, Rose Bryant Jones of North Little Rock, Phyllis Kincannon of Maumelle, Steve Lux of Pine Bluff, and Kermit Parks of El Dorado.
Once the electoral ballots are cast and tabulated, the Secretary of State’s office will send the certified results to President of the United States Senate to be counted on January 6.
