Secretary Daniels Reports Preliminary and Unofficial Statewide Turnout About 65%

Friday, Nov 7, 2008

LITTLE ROCK, AR—Secretary of State Charlie Daniels reports today that the preliminary and unofficial turnout for the November 4 General Election and Nonpartisan Judicial Runoff appears to be around 65 percent based on the initial returns from the counties.

Counties are in the process of entering their preliminary and unofficial results on the Arkansas Secretary of State’s election night reporting website, www.arelections.org.

Counties cannot certify their election results until all of their overseas ballots are returned, but they must submit their final results to the Secretary of State’s office no later than ten days following an election.

The state’s early and absentee vote totals comprised about 25 percent of the state’s 1.68 million registered voters with a combined total of around 415,000 votes cast. The early vote total of around 385,000 breaks the previous early vote record in 2004 of 300,350. This year’s absentee ballot total is around 10,000 less than 2004’s total of 44,729.

In 2004, 1,054,945 voters or 63 percent of all registered voters turned out in the general election. 1996’s turnout percentage matched this year’s with 65 percent. The state record was set in 1980 with 77 percent turnout.
