VOTER REGISTRATION DEADLINE FAST APPROACHING
Thursday, Apr 10, 2008
New voter applicants have until April 21 to register and vote in the May 20 Preferential Primary and Nonpartisan Judicial Election
(LITTLE ROCK, AR)—Secretary of State Charlie Daniels reminds Arkansans that Monday, April 21 is the last day to register to vote for the May 20 Preferential Primary and Nonpartisan Judicial Election.
Arkansans who are not already registered to vote must do so by April 21 to participate in the state’s second preferential primary of the 2008 election season. About 35% of the state’s registered voters turned out for Arkansas’s presidential primary election on February 5, but voters still must decide who will prevail in 50 contested state, district, and judicial positions on May 20.
With such a high-profile presidential election year and two separate Arkansas primary elections, Daniels says his office and the county clerks are seeing a lot of new voter registrations and a little confusion among voters. Last month, the secretary of state received notice that an out-of-state organization is mailing over 100,000 pre-filled voter registration applications to Arkansans who may or may not be registered to vote in an effort to increase participation in the November general election.
“Applying to register to vote is simple and can be done anytime by contacting my office or your local county clerk. If you are already a registered, active voter, there is no need to send in additional forms unless you have moved or changed your name,” Daniels said.
Voters who have changed addresses or names since they last registered may update their information on the voter registration application. Applications may be completed in person at state revenue and county clerks’ offices, public libraries, and public assistance agencies, or they may be mailed to county clerks’ offices or to the Secretary of State’s office. If applying by mail, prospective voters should contact their county clerks to confirm the receipt and acceptance of their completed application.
Arkansans can find the voter registration application, their voter registration status, and more information on Arkansas’s voting process by visiting www.votenaturally.org or contacting the Arkansas Secretary of State Elections Division at (800) 482-1127.
