Gift of 20 English rose bushes to adorn new clinic’s flower beds

(LITTLE ROCK, AR)—Secretary of State Charlie Daniels today donated 20 rose bushes from the State Capitol Rose Garden to Arkansas Children’s Hospital to be placed in the two beds in front of their new Circle of Friends Clinic located at 13th and Marshall Streets.

The donated English rose bushes feature a colorful assortment of blooms in the following varieties: Cotillion, Golden Celebration, Graham Thomas, Geoff Hamilton, The Prince, and Victorian Spice.

“These roses have brought joy to thousands of visitors to the State Capitol over the years,” Daniels said. “Now, it gives me great joy to share their beauty with the children and families staying at Arkansas Children’s Hospital.”

“Arkansas Children’s Hospital takes pride in making our campus a retreat for visitors,” said Dave Berry, the hospital’s senior vice president and chief operating officer. “We look forward to adding these roses from our state’s Capitol to our grounds. They will lift the spirits of the families and children who admire their blooms.”

The roses were exhumed to make room for the placement of this year’s new specimen roses submitted by rose producers for testing by the All-American Rose Society. In the State Capitol test rose garden program, new varieties are graded on such criteria as vigor, growth habit, disease resistance, foliage, flower production, and fragrance on behalf of growers including Weeks, Jackson & Perkins, Conard-Pyle Company, and Angelica Nurseries.

The Arkansas State Capitol Rose Garden presents the beauty of more than 1,000 rose bushes, which bring a flush of color to the Capitol grounds each summer. The 51 varieties of roses in four beds around the State Capitol grounds are a highlight for the Capitol’s 100,000 visitors each year.
