Over 100 candidates file for office on first day

(LITTLE ROCK, ARK.)—Secretary of State Charlie Daniels today kicked-off the March 3-10 candidate filing period with an opening ceremony at the Arkansas State Capitol.

Secretary Daniels counted down the last moments before the official start of the candidate filing period at noon today in the second floor rotunda of the Arkansas State Capitol. The filing period runs through noon on Monday, March 10.

Over 100 candidates turned out for the first day of filing for the over 200 open state, district, and nonpartisan judicial offices in the May 20 Preferential Primary and Nonpartisan General Election. Secretary Daniels previously certified the petitions of 61 nonpartisan judicial candidates. A complete listing of candidates can be found at www.arelections.org under “Candidate Information.”

Act 1049 of 2007 moved the candidate filing period up from the third Tuesday in March to the first weekday in March and shortened it from two weeks to one week in order to extend the timeframe for election officials to transmit absentee ballots to military and overseas voters.

“This year the filing period is earlier by a couple of weeks and shorter by half in order to allow more time to send ballots to our military and overseas citizens,” said Secretary Daniels. “With thousands of our men and women in uniform serving our country overseas, there is no better time than now for us to make this change.”

The deadline to register to vote in the May 20 Preferential Primary and Nonpartisan General Election is April 21. Voters can view their voter registration status, find their polling place, and learn more about voting in Arkansas at www.votenaturally.org.
