(LITTLE ROCK, ARK.) - Arkansas Secretary of State Charlie Daniels today reminded Arkansans to observe proper state flag protocol this Flag Day.
“Our state flag is rich in symbolism and serves as an emblem of pride for all Arkansans,” said Secretary Daniels. “It’s important to remember the proper way to honor and respect this symbol of our statehood at all times, but especially as our nation celebrates Flag Day.”
The Arkansas Flag was adopted as the State Flag by an act of the General Assembly in 1913. The red, white, and blue colors signify inclusion in the United States; the diamond is symbolic of our state’s diamond mine, which is the only one in the nation; and the 25 white stars bordering the diamond represent Arkansas as the 25th state to enter the union.
Protocol exists for the proper care, retirement, and display of our state flag. These guidelines, as compiled by the Committee on Protocol for the Arkansas State Flag, are published in a booklet provided free to the public by the Secretary of State’s office. This guide can be accessed online at

Information on the proper handling of the U.S. flag is located in Title 4, Section 7 of the U.S. Code, which is accessible online at the Government Printing Office’s website at
