61 Nonpartisan Judicial Candidates Certified for May 20 Nonpartisan General and Preferential Primary Election

(LITTLE ROCK, ARK.)—Secretary of State Charlie Daniels today reminded those wishing to run for public office in 2008 of the March 3-10 candidate filing period.

Candidate filing will take place in the second floor rotunda of the Arkansas State Capitol beginning at noon on Monday, March 3 and concluding at noon on Monday, March 10. Secretary Daniels will host a ceremony shortly before noon on March 3 to kick-off the filing period.

Candidates who will file with the Secretary of State’s office include those seeking the over 200 open state, district, and nonpartisan judicial offices in the May 20 Nonpartisan General and Preferential Primary Election. Partisan candidates for county, municipal, and township offices file with their county clerk during this period.

On Friday, Secretary Daniels certified the petitions of 61 nonpartisan judicial candidates, thus qualifying them for the May 20 ballot. These candidates filed petitions with the Secretary of State’s office a month prior to the filing period in order to have their filing fees waived. The number of valid signatures required varies by office. Nonpartisan offices include Supreme Court Justice, Court of Appeals Judge, Circuit Judge, and District Judge.

Act 1049 of 2007 moved the candidate filing period up from the third Tuesday in March to the first weekday in March and shortened it from two weeks to one week in order to allow more time for election officials to transmit absentee ballots to military and overseas voters.
