SECRETARY DANIELS ANNOUNCES NEW STATE CAPITOL BUILDING RESTORATION PROJECT

(LITTLE ROCK, ARK.)—Secretary Daniels today announced that a new project to restore and repair the limestone exterior of the west side of the State Capitol building has commenced. Scaffolding is currently being erected along the building’s west side in order for crews to access the surfaces needing repair.
“Our State Capitol is an historic landmark worth preserving for future generations,” said Secretary Daniels. “It is my honor and duty to do all I can to restore the Capitol to its original grandeur and to ensure that our efforts will withstand the test of time.”
Secretary Daniels has initiated many other Capitol building improvement projects including the cleaning and repair of the Capitol’s north entrance stone, the restoration of the grand east promenade with original landscaping, the renovation of the first floor Capitol Visitors Center, and the restoration of the Capitol’s limestone dome. For these efforts, Secretary Daniels was recently recognized with a 2007 Historic Preservation Alliance of Arkansas Excellence in Preservation Award.
The Arkansas State Capitol Exterior Stone Restoration and Repair Project is being funded with a $1.2 million grant from the Arkansas Natural and Cultural Resources Council. The contract was awarded to Roberts-McNutt earlier this year after they submitted the lowest bid.
This project is expected to be complete in about one year.
