TABULATION COMPLETE, COUNTIES NOW CERTIFYING PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARY ELECTION RESULTS

Monday, Feb 11, 2008

(LITTLE ROCK, ARK.)—Counties are now in the process of certifying their results from the Presidential Primary Election on February 5th. Vote tabulation in Craighead, Sharp, Stone, and Van Buren counties was initially delayed because of severe weather on Election Day.

As of Monday, all of the counties have completed tabulation and reported preliminary and unofficial results into the Arkansas Secretary of State’s election night reporting website, www.arelections.org. According to these preliminary results, turnout was around 34 percent with 540,963 registered voters participating in this election. Around 67,000 voted early and around 9,800 voted absentee.

The counties are required to submit certified election results to the Secretary of State’s office no later than ten days following an election. At that time, the final results and turnout will be determined.

In 2004, 335,016 voters or 22 percent of all registered voters turned out in the statewide Preferential Primary Election. Around 50,000 of them voted early and 9,000 voted absentee. In the 2000 Preferential Primary Election, 291, 473 or 19 percent of all registered voters turned out with around 28,000 of them voting early and 8,000 voting absentee.

The record turnout for a Presidential Preferential Primary in Arkansas appears to have occurred in 1976 with 54 percent of the state's registered voters participating.
