SECRETARY DANIELS URGES ARKANSANS TO EXERCISE THEIR RIGHT TO VOTE TODAY

Tuesday, Feb 5, 2008

(LITTLE ROCK, ARK.)—Secretary of State Charlie Daniels today urged all of Arkansas’s registered voters who were not able to early vote to get out and vote at their regular polling place in the 2008 Presidential Preferential Primary Election on Tuesday, February 5th.

Polling places will be open statewide from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. All registered voters in line by 7:30 p.m. will be allowed to cast a ballot. Voters may verify their polling place location at www.voterview.org or by calling the Secretary of State’s Election Division at (800) 482-1127.

“I urge every registered voter in Arkansas to participate in this historic election,” said Secretary Daniels. “Considering the counties are reporting steady turnout for early voting along with a good number of absentee ballot requests, we are on course for a strong turnout on Election Day.”

In 2004, 335,016 voters or 22% of all registered voters turned out in the statewide Preferential Primary Election. Around 50,000 of them voted early and 9,000 voted absentee. In the 2000 Preferential Primary Election, 291, 473 voters turned out with around 28,000 of them voting early and 8,000 voting absentee.

With 60 counties reporting early vote totals to the state, the preliminary number of early votes cast in this election is 59,000. Of those, approximately 37,000 are Democratic, 20,000 are Republican, and 60 are Green. Counties are also reporting around 9,400 absentee ballot requests.

Voters will have a choice of three different ballots. Below are the candidates certified for each party’s ballot:

Democratic Party: Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, Christopher J. Dodd, John Edwards, Mike Gravel, Dennis J. Kucinich, Barack Obama, and Bill Richardson.

Green Party: Jared A. Ball, Cynthia McKinney, Kent Mesplay, and Kat Swift.

Republican Party: Rudy Giuliani, Mike Huckabee, John McCain, Ron Paul, Mitt Romney, and Fred Thompson.
