Martin stopped at the Capitol on his walking “journey for 9/11” to pay tribute to fallen EMT workers
(LITTLE ROCK, AR)—Secretary of State Charlie Daniels presented National Football League alum George Martin with an Arkansas Traveler certificate at an event this morning at the State Capitol.
“Here we have a hero who used to tackle some of the greatest football legends in America. Now he’s tackling a greater cause, raising millions for health care and medical services for those heroes of 9/11. It was an honor to host him at the State Capitol and help support his mission,” said Secretary Daniels.
Martin, former New York Giants co-captain and Super Bowl XXI champion, is walking across the country in a journey for 9/11 to raise money to benefit thousands of Ground Zero rescue and recovery workers now in failing health. Martin began on the New York side of the George Washington Bridge on September 16, 2007, and will end at the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco in Spring 2008.
On January 10th, Martin’s journey brought him through Little Rock to the Arkansas State Capitol where “The Tree of Life” National Emergency Medical Service Workers Tribute memorial is making a brief appearance on its trek from Roanoke, Virginia to Los Angeles, California for a Department of Homeland Security Conference later this month.
The “Tree of Life” is comprised of bronze leaves engraved with the names and dates of fallen emergency medical services workers, including four Arkansans. The result is a 1,600 pound representation of an oak tree symbolizing the strength and courage of the EMS workers nationwide who died in the line of duty. Additional information on the National EMS Memorial can be found at www.nemsms.org.
George Martin’s cross-country walk can be tracked live via GPS online at www.ajourneyfor911.info.
