(LITTLE ROCK, ARK.) —The famed country music trio from Arkansas, The Browns, will perform their crossover hit, “The Three Bells,” on the floor of the Arkansas State Senate Chamber on Tuesday, March 27th, at 1:30 p.m., in recognition of Senate Concurrent Resolution 10, Encouraging the Country Music Hall of Fame to Add The Browns to its Membership.
The famed vocal trio of Jim Ed Brown and sisters Maxine and Bonnie won international acclaim in the 1950s and ‘60s for hits such as “Looking Back to See,” “Here Today and Gone Tomorrow,” and “I Heard the Bluebirds Sing.” Their biggest success came in 1959 with “The Three Bells,” a chart-topping crossover hit that landed the group on Dick Clark’s American Bandstand and The Ed Sullivan Show.
While regular performers on Little Rock’s Barnyard Frolic, the group became members of the Grand Old Opry cast and performed with legends of country music. The Browns helped a young Elvis Presley join the Louisiana Hayride, and let him tour with them as their opening act. Natives of the rural Dallas County town of Sparkman, The Browns were selected to join the Arkansas Entertainers Hall of Fame in 1997.
In 2005, Secretary of State Charlie Daniels and State Senator Steve Faris (D-Malvern) hosted a book signing at the Capitol for Maxine Brown’s “Looking Back to See: A Country Music Memoir,” which chronicles her career with the group.
Senator Faris, country music historian and host of his own classic country radio show in his hometown of Malvern, is the lead sponsor of SCR 10. All other members of the Arkansas State Legislature have signed on as co-sponsors of this resolution.
The public is invited to view the performance from the East and West galleries of the Senate Chamber.
