(LITTLE ROCK, ARK.) —Arkansas Secretary of State Charlie Daniels announced today the installation of a selection of World War II posters in the lower-level elevator foyer gallery of the Arkansas State Capitol.
A wide variety of commercial artists created the distinctive and compelling designs intended to communicate concepts vital to the war effort in a direct and sometimes humorous manner.
The posters served to encourage citizens to invest in war and victory bonds to finance the war; to conserve and recycle materials, from clothing to scrap metal; to start victory gardens to stretch food rations; to maintain a high morale among citizens by promoting patriotism; and to recruit more men and, increasingly, women into the armed services.
The selection of colorful posters was drawn from the extensive display at the Jacksonville Museum of Military History in Jacksonville, Arkansas.
The exhibit runs through Memorial Day, May 28th, 2007. The Capitol is open to the public from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. weekdays and from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. weekends.
